A quick intro about the Window
Energy Ratings Scheme (WERS)

Understanding window energy-efficiency can at times be a bit daunting. Many factors come into play when assessing window energy-efficiency. Thankfully, some years back, experts in the Australian Fenestration industry established the Australian Windows Association (AWA).

One of the many functions of the AWA is the management of the Window Energy Ratings Scheme (WERS).

WERS allows for fenestration products sold in Australia to be compared for their energy-efficiency. Energy-Efficiency ratings of different single and double-glaze window systems can be researched on their site. Listing this data on the WERS website helps consumers make informed decisions regarding purchases of energy-efficient fenestration products.
WERS is also endorsed on the Australian Government’s website ‘Your Home – Australia’s guide to environmentally sustainable homes’. WERS is the national benchmark for window energy-efficiency ratings in all Australian States and Territories.

The WERS scheme operates on three levels to convey information about the energy performance of custom-rated windows and skylights:

    Indicative % reduction in heating and cooling needs

    Thermal, solar and optical performance data

WERS Ratings Guidelines:

WERS has published thermal-performance ratings for both ‘Standard Industry Typical Timber’ windows and ‘Standard Industry Typical Aluminium’ windows on their website under ‘Certified Residential Products’

TIMBER WINDOWS

According to the AWA, in testing,
based on an average house containing just 8% area of glazing in the entire building fabric, as much as 49% of heat lost can come from the windows.
